Hello all and happy Monday! My final post this January is still along the theme of helping you do something different. This time, it’s helping you keep to those diet-based resolutions you made almost a month ago!
In case you’ve not heard of it, Nibsy’s is a coffee shop unlike any other in Reading; everything they sell is gluten free. Since opening, they’ve also branched out to cover other dietary requirements too, including vegan. IR caught up with owner Naomi, to learn a bit more about how Nibsy’s came to be.
When did you realise you wanted to open a coffee shop catering to those with special dietary requirements?
“As a little girl, I always dreamed of owning a café but ended up deciding to go into an office environment for greater job security. When I was 25 though, I discovered I had developed an intolerance to wheat and gluten. I struggled to find tasty treats that suited my diet, despite there being an abundance of coffee shops where I was working.
Then I fell pregnant and used my maternity leave to plan what else I could do. Eventually I found some premises and gave myself 8 weeks to open up!”
What do you think is the secret to your success?
“I think that the uniqueness of us being a gluten-free venue has really helped as it meant lots of people were talking about us before we opened. I also had a friend working at Get Reading who published an article the month before we opened; that ended up being the most shared article of the week!
We’re something of a destination place and the demand for not only gluten free, but dairy free products has been huge. We’ve branched out into vegan baking and now have 50% more choice across the range day-to-day than we did when we opened. We also offer more savoury options than we used to, but the great thing is it’s pretty much all available to take away.”
Finally, why Nibsy’s?
“Nibs is a nickname of mine, so it seemed like a good choice of name for my coffee shop.”
Nibsy’s won the Reading Retail Award for “Cafés, Coffee and Lunch” in 2015 and 2017.
