Good morning and what a glorious way to start the week, by introducing you to Chapter and the brilliant team behind it.
If you aren’t sure where to find Chapter, you’ll find them on Prospect Street in Caversham, at the site that was previously Tipsy Bean. The building’s had a makeover and its modern décor presents a relaxed yet chic environment to enjoy with friends. So, let’s learn a bit more about this business and the people behind it…
Who’s behind Chapter?
Tom and Dan are the team responsible for bringing Chapter to Caversham. Tom has spent the past 15 years working in the food retail industry, across a number of varied roles. Dan has spent the past decade as a restaurant and bar designer, more recently focussing on accessible and inclusive design. They figured that their combined experience would cover all bases and have relished the opportunity to put this all into practice.
Tell us, why did you choose Chapter as a name?
“Caversham has a really interesting history and we wanted to have a meaningful name which acknowledged this. Many people in the community will remember The Caversham Bookshop and WordPlay, so we took inspiration from these great businesses and chose a book-related name. We’ve been in touch with the previous owners of The Caversham Bookshop who have shared many of their memories and photos with us and we’ll be sharing these in the bar with our customers too. It’s fascinating!”
What appealed to you about running a bar?
From living in and visiting various places around the world, we wanted to take all the best bits and create an environment where people can come and have a great time, whether it’s for a party, a quiet drink, or even a coffee to take away. Coming to a bar is all about enjoyment and working in one should be like that too!
How did you feel about working on a bar opening at a time when the government had mandated closures of so many businesses?
It has been an interesting time to prepare for a big launch, but there’s a clear gap in the market for a bar like Chapter in Caversham. Our offer is unique and unlike chains, we have total freedom which allows us to quickly adapt and meet customer needs. We’re confident that our customers are keen to support independent businesses and see them flourish as part of the vibrant community here.
What’s the best bit about being open?
Creating a space where people can relax, enjoy seeing friends and family, and forget about the world outside! Longer term, when the time is right, we’re excited about parties, themed nights with special cocktails and other events – you’ll hear about these first via our mailing list!
Which drink would you pick off your cocktail menu?
It may sound boring by our favourites are the old classics, like Espresso Martini… but we have enjoyed testing all the new cocktails (purely in the name of research!). The Pink Flamingo is really popular at the moment, maybe because of its bright colour and refreshing pineapple taste.
Do you have any special offers that IR readers should know about?
As well as our cocktail happy hour 5-7pm everyday (2 for £12), we’ve got some great Prosecco deals. On Thursday we have buy one get one free on bottles of Prosecco – definitely bring friends or family along to help with this! We also have Bottomless Prosecco on Sunday, where 2 people can tuck into one of our boards while having quite a few glasses! For August this is just £25 per person for two hours, reduced from £30.
