Hands up, who’s been to a market recently? OK, so your hand’s still up…who’s been to a market in Caversham recently? I’m going to hedge a bet that there are few of you who think you have the market scene in Reading nailed but haven’t actually been over to Caversham Artisan & Farmers Market yet to check it out. Luckily I’ve been for you… a couple of times actually.

Scones

CAFM, as it’s known by the regulars started up in November last year because it’s founders, Jodie and Claire spotted a market-shaped gap in Caversham. Jodie and Claire run MooMoo Soaps, (who you might remember from my Christmas Gift Guide) and so were familiar with the market scene from their time as traders and decided to open Caversham up to the variety that a market provides.

The market is held on the first and third Sundays of each month, from 10am until 3pm and the traders vary from regulars you can count on for your veg or scones to those who pop up seasonally. At Christmas, it was the perfect place to buy gifts, this coming Sunday it will be the perfect place to buy your homemade ice-cream to enjoy in the sunshine.

So where is it held? The market is located at the far side of what I call the Waitrose car park, though I have no idea whether they own it or not. It’s right next to the precinct. This means a) you can park your car incredibly close, FOR FREE; b) there are toilets on-site if you need them and c) you’ll be in Caversham so the river is a short stroll away if you’d rather take your spoils down there to eat/ogle/wash in the river with!

Veg

As well as traders, you’ll also find buskers down at the market so you can get your live music fix as well and they’re hoping to have a seating area soon so you’ll be able to relax and take it easy while listening to the marvellous tunes. Incidentally, if you are a busker…or indeed a trader who thinks CAFM is the place for you, get in touch with the team to find out how you can get involved.

Now, one final thing…we’re all familiar with the old “use it or lose” phrase but this is especially critical when it comes to independent businesses. Then multiply that by a whole market and you’ll start to imagine how important you all are in keeping CAFM alive. Without you, these markets can’t happen. The team have done a great job so far but we’d all LOVE to see the market expand exponentially and provide you with the ultimate shopping experience. So please, lend your support and head down.
